How to Bathe a Dog
Unlike cats who are fastidious about their own grooming and are constantly cleaning themselves, dogs are overly domesticated animals and need our help in order to keep clean.
Bathing will help a dog keep a healthy shiny coat and it will keep away those unpleasant “doggie” odors.
Bathing should take place often enough to keep your dog clean but not too often since too much bathing can dry your dog’s skin, and can cause scaling and other problems. Once a month will keep your pooch clean unless you are dealing with flea or tick infestation in which case you may want to go for a once a week bath.
Start by choosing a mild natural dog shampoo such as Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Shampoo & Conditioner.
If you don’t have access to this product, try natural Castile soap from the health food store.
If your dog gives you a hard time about bathing speak in a soft reassuring voice to calm him down. If you have a laundry sink, fill it with warm water. If not try your bathtub.
Lower him slowly into the water, take off the collar and gently wet his coat all around. Apply shampoo or soap and wash thoroughly. Rinse and shampoo a second time. If fleas are present, use a comb in combination with the lather to get the fleas off of your dog’s coat. Rinse thoroughly. Dry well with a clean towel.
